Job Description


Data has been at the heart of the insurance industry for many years and the amount being generated daily is growing exponentially. A huge opportunity exists to create massive disruption to the insurance model due to technology improvements, which allows us to uncover greater insights.


The AI CoE will create environment to contribute and develop skills at the cutting edge of technology. Artificial Intelligence (AI) - Machine learning is one of the skill sets that Allstate continues to grow.  The resources within the AI CoE will be responsible for researching, designing, and building systems through implementation of supervised and unsupervised machine-learning techniques. Technologies and methodologies applied will include machine learning, information retrieval, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, and vision processing technologies. Incumbents will work both individually and with small teams to envision and realize cutting-edge ideas through rapid prototyping, development and deployment. Teams will work on business problems and Proof of Concepts to help determine which opportunities to pursue further and share these findings to assist Allstate’s future product development.


The AI CoE is seeking a talented, forward thinking, hands-on Machine Learning Engineer to join a team of knowledgeable technical professionals to research, pilot and deploy predictive modeling algorithms and develop tools that utilize machine learning to help make business decisions.


The Machine Learning Engineer will partner with the business to identify opportunities in the use of data to solve business problems through the use of machine learning models and also explore integrating internal and external data pipelines to improve the models and results. The Engineer will work on projects of varying levels of complexity and will start with mentoring and development support to help expand and enhance required skills and knowledge to ensure success in this role with a team working on cutting edge technology.



Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):


  • Learn business concepts and domains quickly.
  • Understand business problems to identify the optimal modeling approach.
  • Perform data preparation using packages such as Numpy, Scipy, pandas, dplyr.
  • Visualize data using packages such as plotly, ggplot2, Matplotlib.
  • Code and develop machine learning prototypes in languages such as Python, R, SAS, Java.
  • Utilize machine learning frameworks such as PyTorch, Keras, Tensorflow, SciKit-Learn, Caffe, MXNet.
  • Learn and gain a functional understanding of supporting technologies to achieve results (e.g. Jupyter, R-Studio, Hadoop, Spark, Kafka, Sagemaker etc.)
  • Identify new areas of data, research and models that can solve business problems.
  • Ability to understand data requests and make recommendations on improving its quality.
  • Aptitude for trouble-shooting and problem-solving.
  • Collaborate with team in order to improve the effectiveness of business decisions through the use of data and machine learning/predictive modeling.
  • Work with stakeholders to ensure the machine learning solutions meet business needs.
  • Utilizes effective project planning techniques to break down moderately complex and occasionally complex projects into tasks and ensure deadlines are kept.
  • Creating and maintaining clear and concise technical documentation.
  • Have excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills.


Essential criteria candidates should clearly state on their application form how they meet each of the essential criteria as these will be assessed during shortlisting and only these deemed to meet all of the below criteria will move forward to the next stage.


  • BSc/MSc degree in Computer Science/Mathematics/Physics/Electrical Engineering [Machine Learning or Artificial Intelligence Modules preferred]
  • 4+Years of  relevant IT experience
  • Solid mathematics background (linear algebra, probability, optimization).
  • Good knowledge of statistics skills, such as distributions, statistical testing, regression, etc.
  • Experience using statistical modeling or machine learning techniques to build models that have driven company decision making.
  • Excellent understanding of machine learning techniques and algorithms such as k-NN, Naïve Bayes, SVM, Decision Forests, CNN etc.
  • Experience with and implementing feature detection and classification.
  • Fundamental understanding of database concepts and technologies.
  • Must be an EU citizen or possess a current UK Tier 1 Visa or Tier 2 visa and eligible to take up full time, permanent employment
