Job Summary

LOCATION: Charlotte, NC

Salary Range: Starting from $110,000/yr commensurate with experience

Allstate Dealer Services (ADS), a division of Allstate has traditionally sold vehicle service contracts through dealerships during the purchase process.  As part of Allstate’s digital initiative, we are working towards making the purchase of these contracts more accessible while still maintaining our relationship with our dealers.  We have also been working to create portals for our customers to both purchase and manage their contracts while building a platform where the products can be purchased using API’s from other systems.

 

The Software Engineer Expert architects and designs their digital products using modern tools, technologies, frameworks, and systems.  They apply a systematic application of scientific and technological knowledge, methods, and experience to the design, implementation, testing, and documentation of software.  They own and manage running their application in production, and ultimately becomes accountable for the success of their digital products through achieving KPIs.

The Software Engineer Expert plans, directs, designs, and executes IT-related activities and programs that are of a complex and critical nature. 

Key Responsibilities

•    Participate in inception and iteration planning meetings, infusing backlogs with technical input working in close partnership with the product owner and product engineering manager

•    Lead and participates in daily site, cross-site, and product team standups

•    Lead and participates in retrospectives; demonstrating and encouraging each participant to provide feedback with empathy

•    Partner in collaboration and strategy alignment across product portfolios (cross-product) in partnership with product managers, other peers and key stakeholders with the customer needs and wants in mind

•    Serve as an expert on one or more business domains and a lead advocate of one or more technology stacks; share that knowledge across organizations

•    Participate in shaping the architecture and design of the products we build; actively help the team in choosing the right technology, and solving technical problems

•    Coach the team in writing software and building products

•    Establish continuous integration, continuous delivery, and continuous deployment pipelines and practices

•    Lead and participate in knowledge sharing, and contribute to the overall growth of the collective knowledge of the engineering community

 

Preferred Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • 7 or more years of related experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

Required Skills

  • 5+ years of developing and implementing systems at scale 
  • Experience designing applications iteratively – you will not receive a full spec upfront and will need to feel comfortable thinking things through, filling in the blanks, and iterating across sprints as we receive feedback and pivot based on customer feedback
  • Experience developing software in different programming languages such as Java (Spring), .NET and JavaScript (REACT), and demonstrated ability to quickly learn new languages
  • Experience and knowledge in developing REST APIs including tooling for documentation (swagger, REST-docs, openapi spec), versioning, service discovery/registration, testing and management; experience using API gateways a plus
  • Experience and knowledge in web and API security including authentication, authorization, OAuth, OWASP, OpenID, and SAML
  • Experience in backend development design and implementation; database (relational, NoSQL, caching), messaging and big data development, implementation and optimization
  • Experience in responsive web front end / single page application development using modular JavaScript including apps targeted for mobile devices
  • Hands on experience on modern JavaScript tools such as Webpack, Babel, ESLint, Gulp, NPM, Bower, Browserify, Grunt and similar technologies
  • Knowledge and advanced experience using distributed version control systems (git), artifact management systems, build and packaging systems (maven, gradle, npm, artifactory, etc…) and continuous integration tools (Jenkins, TravisCI, Concourse, Bamboo, GoCD).
  • Understanding of distributed systems, operating systems, networking, databases, security, and analytics
  • Understanding of cloud services, deployment models, and distributed 
  • Strong verbal communication and collaboration skills
