Job Description:


This position will report into the Chicago Investments downtown office.  


Allstate Investment’s Opportunistic Team is seeking a post-MBA Senior Associate who has a passion for debt and equity investing to become a member of our team. On behalf of Allstate's $65B+ portfolio, the team sits within the Private Alternative Investments Group and makes direct debt and equity investments into illiquid securities, and also invests in select debt, real asset and special situations funds.  The investment mandate is global, but focused on North America, emphasizing corporate, specialty finance, and real asset strategies.  Our offices are located in downtown Chicago, currently with seven investment professionals on the team.  The Opportunistic portfolio is approximately $1 billion in size. 

The Senior Associate will assist in all phases of investing - origination, evaluation, execution, monitoring and management - of our portfolio.  

Key Responsibilities


In alignment with corporate goals, specific responsibilities for the Opportunistic Senior Associate will include:


  • Partner with Opportunistic senior staff in the idea generation, research and investment thesis development activities that create actionable deal flow fitting the portfolio construction and risk management parameters for Opportunistic investing.  
  • Perform quantitative and qualitative analysis used to support the underwriting of potential investment opportunities.
  • Prepare internal memoranda and other materials used to support investment recommendations and to communicate with internal constituents.
  • Assess the performance of existing investments, including financial analysis of the underlying portfolio companies of sponsors' funds.
  • Evaluate market conditions in existing and potential new alternative investment categories.  Provide information and analysis to develop and support asset allocation decisions related to these categories.
  • Develop and maintain a broad-base of relationships across the spectrum of industry participants in order to inform an active market view.
  • Closely monitor the performance of existing portfolio investments, including regular communication with financial sponsors/partners and management teams.
  • Oversee and mentor junior team members on transactions and career development.

Job Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a minimum of two years of work experience in investment banking, opportunistic investing, or leveraged lending.  Prior experience will ideally include direct exposure to opportunistic or special situation investing.  Additional skills required include:


  • An MBA is required
  • Proven ability to effectively build relationships internally and externally.  External focus on sources of deal flow, transaction counterparties and other market participants. 
  • Proven ability to manage multiple investment-related projects in a time critical, transaction-oriented environment.
  • Knowledge of, and ongoing interest in, current trends, success factors, participants and terms in private equity and related alternative investment markets. 
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing financial statements and developing financial models and/or completion of a strong credit training program.  Strong knowledge of accounting and finance. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Willingness to work hard in a team-oriented, performance-based environment. 
  • A self starter that requires limited oversight. 
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office.  
  • Experience with research and analytical tools 
  • Some travel required
