Job Description

The Allstate Innovation team helps drive Allstate’s future by identifying compelling business opportunities, developing selected opportunities into thriving businesses, and assisting Allstate businesses with meeting their innovation objectives. Allstate Innovation brings together skills in strategy, design, technology, and marketing to create new products and businesses. The Innovation Strategist role delivers appropriate, actionable, and tangible strategies with the result of new, innovative avenues for growth that are grounded in business viability and market desirability.

The Innovation Strategist leads high profile projects to develop new products and businesses around emerging technologies (e.g. AI/ML techniques, big data, autonomous vehicles, ubiquitous connected devices, etc.).  This role is a critical thought leader and drives hard business results, while helping shape Allstate’s future strategy. This role includes immersion in cutting-edge technologies and frequent exposure to interesting startups.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead individual projects to define winning strategies and business models around innovation opportunities, including framing the problem, scoping the work and delivery process, answer/hypothesis generation, and design of analyses
  • Develop and deploy structured, hypothesis-driven problem solving approaches to bring clarity to ambiguous business issues (e.g. where Allstate should create a business to capture an undefined whitespace opportunity, how Allstate will differentiate vs. competition, what business levers will create value)
  • Design thoughtful analysis and deploy creative thinking to solve these problems, primarily guiding and overseeing the work of others (and occasionally performing their own analysis).
  • Translate strategy to action by planning and coordinating effective product design, testing/prototyping, and market launch efforts – in collaboration with subject matter experts, that result in developing business requirements for new products, either individually or in partnership with a product manager
  • Outline key assumptions to test with live users (including but not limited to technical prototypes), and develop approaches for measuring and validating the results – guiding and influencing the work of technical resources.  In addition, outline integrated market launch plans, including desired pricing, distribution, advertising/promotion, and operations blueprint
  • Partner with appropriate AOR stakeholders to determine what is practical and how best to move forward with implementation
  • Build alignment across the leadership team through clear communication – rooted in a warm, collaborative engagement style.  Tactically, this will require designing and structuring crisp discussion messaging and materials for executive-level meetings, and also taking on meaningful presentation roles in these meetings.  Interpersonally, this will require developing strong relationships across multiple levels of leadership and earning influence and credibility along the way

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with a differentiated academic track record; MBA from a leading institution preferred
  • 7-10+ years of work experience
  • 2+ years of post-MBA level strategy consulting experience
  • “Top-tier generalist” able to quickly get up to speed on unfamiliar subject areas
  • Broad business acumen to tackle a wide range of issues in an integrated fashion (e.g. markets, competition, business models, operations, organization)
  • Interested in and conversant about technology
  • Prioritized and adaptable “80/20” approach, allocating efforts against the highest value areas
  • Ability to lead project teams day-to-day and collaborate productively with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Proven ability to influence through effective “client-ready” communication and presentation skills; experience planning and facilitating workshop sessions
  • Expert in MS Excel and PowerPoint
